was negative in 92% of cases. Viral serology showed
negativity for IgM and IgG positivity for EBV (73.8%), CMV (71.4%), HSV (47.6%), ancl VZV
(21.4%), respectively (Tahle 2).
All cases hacl decreased sicleraemia, a deficit of IgA and IgG with slight increase
of transaminase (Tahle 3), 66% of cases had constipation and 31% had proctitis with
nkicous and hloody stools.
The HLA A3 and DR7 were more frequent in patients with post-vaccine disease than in
normal controls, 43.3% vs 25% (p<O.O5) and 48.3% vs 24.1% (p<O.05),
respectively.
DISCUSSION
Tissue typing study was requested
to investigate the relationship between post-vaccine CNS cliseases and HLA antigens which
could have suggested an immunogenetic basis (autoimnmne type) responsihle of demyelination
processes (4).
The alleles of HLA system have elevated genetic polymorphism and autosomal dominant
inheritance. The comhination of alleles in different loci of one chromosome is called
halplotype or complex gene. In the HLA regions there are thousands of possihle
halplotypes. The prohlem of molecular similarity is relatecl to the discrimination between
self and non-self antigens, in which process is involved class ha HLA (5). Every
interference with antigens presentation process may predispose to autoimrnune
disease.
In these cases a cross reactivity may have occurred with myehin Antigens.

The study of diseases associatecl to HLA antigens
showed that this complex system rnay suggest a ge netic predisposition to several diseases
with autoimmune aetiology.
Most vaccines have in their composition Thiomersal which has been the reportecl
cause of neurologic and gastrointestinal (mainly relatecl to the purinic nervous pathway)
symptoms (6,7). These actions are not dose related (8,9,10,11,12).
It has been ohserved that the clearest is the specie from a microhiological point
of view and the highest is the occurrence of autoimmune CNS diseases. In support of this
thesis is the fact that autoimmune cliseases are more frequent in nations where vaccines
are wilclly used, the so called “clear communities.
This study suggest that the research of alleles A3 and DR7 may visualise risk
patients for autoimmune diseases. Thiomersal induces modifications of aminoacicls in
presenting antigen proteins ancl this action may be responsihle for its dose-inclipendent
toxicity (8,9,10,11,12).
This study may he also helpful to investigate the etiopathogenesis of other
autoimmune disease.
