The Swedish government started in the autumn 2002 a new evaluation of
dental materials and how patients who consider themselves sick from
amalgam fare in the health care system. A safety evaluation of dental
amalgam has just been published (april 25, 2003). Prof. Maths Berlin,
former WHO leading expert on effects of mercury, was given the the task of
evaluating amalgam risks.
The evaluation was presented on the front page of Dagens Nyheter,
leading swedish newspaper today (26 april): "Amalgam hazard
underestimated". "The marginal of safety which researchers
thought to be present with regards to health effects of amalgam does not
exist. Sensitive persons can be damaged because of mercury in their mouths."
Maths Berlin: "I think that amalgam as soon as possible should be
banned in the whole European Union. Every medical doctor and dentist
should consider whether mercury from amalgam could be a contributing
factor when they meet patients with unclear diseases and diseases which
involve the immune system."
"Regarding the risk for retardation of brain development it is not
according to science and standard of care to place amalgam fillings in
children and fertile women."
"Mercury is a multipotent poison with effects on several levels of
cell function and therefore unsuitable as a dental filling material."
Comment: for a licensed dentist to practice contrary to science and
standard of care is considered quackery and leads to diciplinary action !

AMALGAMI al
MERCURIO: VIETATE in NORVEGIA, SVEZIA, DANIMARCA
Vietato l'uso di mercurio per uso dentistico in
Norvegia, Svezia e Danimarca, poiché può essere
adeguatamente sostituito con altri composti.
La Norvegia ha recentemente annunciato un
divieto di impiego di mercurio, comprese le
amalgami dentali, che è entrato in vigore il 1°
gennaio 2008.
La Svezia ha annunciato un analogo divieto e ai
dentisti in Danimarca non sarà più consentito
utilizzare il mercurio nelle otturazioni dopo il
1° aprile 2008.
Questi divieti indicano chiaramente che
l'amalgama non è più necessaria. Ci sono validi
sostituti del mercurio per le otturazioni che
vengono usati ogni giorno negli Stati Uniti, ha
detto Michael Bender, direttore del Mercury
Policy Project.
Al fine di eliminare l'uso di amalgama, che è
costituita per il 50% di mercurio, siamo in
grado di ridurre l'inquinamento da mercurio in
modo molto più efficace rispetto a soluzioni (end-of-the-pipeline)
.
In un comunicato ufficiale, il ministro
norvegese dell'ambiente Erik Solheim ha detto
che il motivo del divieto è il rischio di
inquinamento che i prodotti contenenti mercurio
possono costituire per l'ambiente.
Il mercurio è tra le più pericolose tossine
ambientali.
Solheim ha detto: ''Attualmente sono disponibili
soddisfacenti alternative al mercurio nei vari
prodotti, e quindi è opportuno introdurre un
divieto''. Il divieto svedese per le amalgami
riguarda sia la questione ambientale che la
salute, secondo le autorità.
I funzionari Danesi indicano che uno dei motivi
per vietare le amalgami è il fatto che oggi i
preparati ( i composti) per otturazioni sono
migliorati, e possono ora essere utilizzati in
molte più situazioni rispetto a pochi anni fa. I
denti dovranno essere otturati ad esempio con
plastica o ceramica.
Eccezioni nell'utilizzo di amalgama potranno
essere concesse per un certo periodo di tempo
dopo il divieto, se i dentisti saranno d'accordo
il ministro danese della Salute Axel Jakob
Nielsen ha detto alla Tv Avisen: ''I nuovi
componenti (composti) per otturazioni sono così
resistenti che il Consiglio Nazionale Danese
della Salute sostiene che siamo in grado di
estendere il divieto anche alle otturazioni in
amalgama'' (in pratica significa: dato che oggi
esistono nuovi materiali per otturazioni molto
resistenti in ceramica e plastica, le amalgami
non serviranno più e perciò saranno abolite e
vietate )
Le Autorità avvisano che in Danimarca, 4 mesi
dopo l'entrata in vigore del divieto, l'attuale
sussidio sanitario previsto per le amalgami
verrà modificato in modo che servirà a coprire
le spese per le otturazioni dentali di materiale
composito (plastica e ceramica).
In Svezia, dato che l'assicurazione sanitaria
dal 1999 ha smesso di coprire le spese per le
otturazioni in amalgama, il ricorso a tali
amalgami è diminuito notevolmente ed è ora
stimato al 2-5% di tutte le otturazioni.

Composites Are Adequate Replacements -
Norway recently announced a ban on the use of
mercury, including dental amalgam, that took
effect on January 1, 2008. Sweden
announced a similar ban and dentists in Denmark
will no longer be allowed to use mercury in
fillings after April 1, 2008.
"These bans clearly indicate
that amalgam is no longer needed. There
are viable non-mercury filling substitutes that
are used everyday in the US," said Michael
Bender, director of the Mercury Policy Project.
"By eliminating amalgam use, which is 50%
mercury, we can reduce mercury pollution much
more efficiently than end-of-the-pipeline
solutions."
In a prepared statement, Norwegian Minister of
the Environment Erik Solheim said that the
reason for the ban is the risk that mercury from
products may constitute in the environment. "Mercury
is among the most dangerous environmental toxins.
Satisfactory alternatives to mercury in products
are available, and it is therefore fitting to
introduce a ban," said Solheim.
The Swedish amalgam ban is for both
environmental and health issues, according to
authorities. Danish officials indicate that the
reason for banning amalgam is also because
composites have become better, and may now be
used in many more situations than a few years
ago.
Teeth will have to be mended
with e.g. plastic or ceramics. Exceptions
to use amalgam may be granted for a certain
period after the ban, if dentists apply for it.
"Composite fillings have now
become so strong that the Danish National Board
of Health says that we can expand the ban to
also include amalgam fillings," said the
(Danish) Minister of Health Jakob Axel Nielsen
to "TV Avisen".
Authorities note that when the ban takes
effect in Denmark in four months time, the
present subsidy for amalgam will be changed so
that it will instead cover dental fillings of
composite material.
Since the health insurance
stopped paying for amalgam restorations in
Sweden in 1999, the use has decreased markedly
and is now estimated to be 2-5% of all fillings.
